Marla Ahlgrimm: Health is More than Your Body

Marla Ahlgrimm
Marla Ahlgrimm has been in the women’s healthcare industry for more than four decades. She is a retired pharmacist, self-help author, and hormone expert who believes that a healthy body is often a matter of choice. However, she also stresses that mental health plays a role in your body’s overall function.

According to Marla Ahlgrimm, women should pay attention to factors that affect their emotional well-being. Stress, poor relationships, and even a lack of sleep can throw your brain out of whack and strain your emotions.

Living with excessive stress not only wears you out mentally but is one of the leading causes of unbalanced cortisol production. Cortisol is a hormone associated with stress and can make you gain weight and feel generally unwell. A few ways to reduce stress include:

  • Meditating. Marla Ahlgrimm explains that there is no hard and fast rule on how to meditate. Something as simple as giving yourself 10 minutes of quiet time at the beginning and end of each day to sort through your feelings can go a long way toward improving your overall mental health.
  • Delegate tasks. As women, we tend to want it all. We want to be mothers, business women, and lovers. But Marla Ahlgrimm says in order to have it all, we have to be willing to ask for and accept help. Talk to your spouse or partner and make sure you are sharing responsibilities at home. If you own a business, hire someone to take your most stressful burdens, such as accounting, off your plate.
  • Step away. In addition to delegating stressful tasks, Marla Ahlgrimm asserts that women should make a point to step away from their responsibilities on occasion. A long weekend at the beach or a monthly night out with your spouse, partner, or friends can help you reset and rejuvenate so that you can tackle your responsibilities with a clear mind and energized body.
