Women looking to lose weight may wish to switch some of their fat calories for protein calories. And, given that the prevalence of women in their 40s considered obese has grown more than 42% over the last year, eating more protein may help to lower these numbers. Breast-feeding and pregnant moms should also consider adding additional protein to their diet. Expectant and breast-feeding moms need twice as much protein as nonpregnant women. 
 
So, how much protein do you need? Marla Ahlgrimm says that a general rule of thumb is to calculate your recommended dietary allowance by multiplying .336 by your weight in pounds. Further, women who are extremely active may want to add a bit of extra protein to their diet. Regardless of where you fall on the health spectrum, Marla Ahlgrimm suggests talking with your healthcare provider before drastically altering your diet.
