Marla Ahlgrimm | Do I Have PMS?

Marla Ahlgrimm

Marla Ahlgrimm is the co-author of Self-Help For Premenstrual Syndrome. Today, she touches on a few things all women should know about PMS.

Q: What is PMS?

Marla Ahlgrimm: Simply put, PMS is a biological function of a woman’s body preparing for gestation each month. It can result in everything from headaches and cramps to fatigue and irritability. Unfortunately, these symptoms have historically been attributed to women “rejecting the feminine role.” The good news is that, despite what the historical patriarchy might have us believe, PMS is natural, and there are many things you can do to help yourself feel better.

Q: How do I know if I have PMS?

Marla Ahlgrimm: Premenstrual syndrome is fairly easy to diagnose on your own. In the days before you start your period, you might experience constipation, water retention, appetite changes, anxiety, and backaches. Many women also report muscle pain, diarrhea, and increased appetite, and trouble concentrating.

Q: What are some self-care methods that can help?

One of the best things you can do before you experience PMS is to begin a physical exercise routine. Aerobic activity, such as jogging, jump roping, or bicycling, five days each week can help your body stay in peak condition. This can help to reduce the sensation of discomfort you might feel. Further, specific symptoms, such as cramps, can be treated individually. A hot water bottle on the stomach for cramping and muscle aches, extra sleep for irritability, and drinking plenty of water for diarrhea are all examples of how you can take care of yourself when PMS knocks on your door.

Q: Can a doctor help if self-care doesn’t?

Marla Ahlgrimm: Often, yes. Speak with your OB/GYN or PCP about your condition. They can recommend things like over-the-counter medications, cognitive behavioral treatments, or certain hormone therapies that might help to reduce your PMS symptoms.
