The Hair Hormones 
  
Androgens are the most important hormones for hair growth. They include testosterone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS). Androgens stimulate the growth of terminal hair, which Marla Ahlgrimm explains is the thick, dark hair that grows on the scalp, face, and body. 

Estrogens are another type of hormone that affects hair growth. Estrogens promote the growth of vellus hair, which is the fine, light-colored hair that covers most of the body. Estrogens also help to keep hair follicles healthy and prevent them from shrinking. 
  
Progesterone is one of the hormones produced during pregnancy and menstruation. Progesterone can cause hair loss in some women. 
  
Other hormones that can affect hair growth include: 
  • Growth hormone (GH). Marla Ahlgrimm explains that GH stimulates hair growth by increasing the production of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1). IGF-1 promotes healthy cell growth and development. 
  • Thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormone’s job is to regulate the hair cycle and prevent hair loss. 
  • Cortisol. Cortisol (the stress hormone) can cause hair loss if it is elevated for long periods of time. Unfortunately, Marla Ahlgrimm laments that many women experience high stress and prolonged cortisol levels. 
Changes in hormone levels can affect hair growth in many ways. Hormonal changes during puberty, pregnancy, menopause, and aging can all lead to hair loss or changes in hair texture. 

Marla Ahlgrimm notes that certain medical conditions, including polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, and Cushing's syndrome can also cause hair loss, as these affect the hormones as well. 

If you are experiencing hair loss or other hair problems, Marla Ahlgrimm stresses that it’s important to see a doctor to rule out any underlying medical conditions. Once these have been treated, your doctor may recommend medications or other treatments to help improve hair growth and health. 
  
Marla Ahlgrimm also lists ways that women can keep their hair healthy: 
  • Eat a balanced diet. This includes plenty of protein, iron, and zinc. Eating well can also help keep other health issues, such as obesity, at bay, says Marla Ahlgrimm. 
  • Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. 
  • Manage stress levels to reduce cortisol production. 
  • Protect your hair from the sun and other environmental damage. Wear a hat when outdoors and use heat protectant spray if styling with heat. 
  • Use a mild shampoo and conditioner. Avoid hair products with dyes and heavy scents.  
  • Avoid over-styling your hair. 
  • If you have concerns about your hair growth or health, be sure to talk to your doctor.
